Cataracts and vision loss

One quarter of all people in the UK aged over 75 will develop cataracts and after the age of 50 your chances of having cataracts really begin to increase. A cataract causes damage to the eye lens and the only available treatment to restore vision damaged by cataracts is the removal of the cataract and the damaged eye lens. Cataract surgeons then replace the natural eye lens with an intraocular lens to restore vision.

What is a cataract and what causes cataracts?

A cataract damages the eye lens, distorting the way light enters the eye and causing vision to become cloudy.

The eye lens works like a camera: light enters the eye and is sent in a clean line backwards through the eye to the retina. From the retina, electrical images are sent to the brain and these images are what we see.

When the eye lens becomes clouded by a cataract, light defracts as it enters the eye, sending fractured images towards the retina. The images we see become distorted or 'cloudy'.

Cataracts are caused by a build up of proteins in the eye. These proteins gradually clump together and damage the eye lens. The longer a cataract is left untreated the more proteins that cloud the lens and the more damaged vision becomes.

What are the symptoms of a cataract?

The most common symptoms of cataracts are blurred or cloudy vision, difficulty in seeing bright colours, seeing halos or glare around bright lights and poor night vision. What Is Macular Degeneration And Its Two Forms?

If on the other hand you have the wet form of macular degeneration, abnormal blood vessels grow under the retinal pigment epithelium layer. It leads to bleeding and leaking that in turn causes scarring. Then, your eyesight transcends from having blind spots to finally losing your vision. This is a condition that develops rather faster than the dry form.

Vision Care and Safe Driving


As a minimum legal requirement to ensure safe driving, drivers should display visual acuity of 20/40 with or without corrective lenses. Restrictions generally apply to those with acuity between 20/41 and 20/70, limiting them to driving in daylight hours only.

A 120 degree wide field of view is the minimum legal requirement for peripheral vision in order to qualify for a license without restrictions (in some states the threshold is higher at 140 degrees). This is with or without corrective lenses.

If you are a wearer of telescopic lenses, a useful driving aid for sufferers of diminished visual acuity whose peripheral vision remains virtually intact, you will be subject to special requirements and additional testing.

Telescopic lens wearers must include the ability to locate stationary and moving objects within the telescopic field, and the ability to adjust successfully to changes in light levels, especially during inclement weather. Excessive contrast and glare sensitivity also compromises safe driving.

As a responsible driver, then, you should be aware of breaking the law if you fail to meet these visual standards every time you switch on your engine. In particular, if you do need to wear corrective lenses to meet the driving visual standard, it is vital you wear them at all times. It is a good idea to keep a spare pair of glasses in the auto so that you are never tempted to drive illegally without them.

Let's now look more closely at drivers' eyewaer as this aspect of vision care contributes significantly to safe driving. Here are some important guidelines:

* The current fashion is for narrower, thin-rimmed or rimless glasses. These are ideal for driving as they allow maximum peripheral vision (They are not so good, however, for cutting out the glare of reflected ultraviolet rays from snow and sand).

* At a reasonable cost, anti-reflective coatings can be applied to any lenses helping to reduce glare and enhance nighttime vision.

* Glasses with plastic lenses are safer and lighter. A plastic bridge helps cushion the nose if wearing metal frames.

* Keep a lens cloth in your auto along with your spare pair of glasses. Glasses and contact lenses should be kept scrupulously clean to ensure a clear field of vision.

* Wearers of contact lenses, and sufferers from hay fever, should also keep a spare pair of glasses in the auto. Switching to a pair of glasses when travelling long distances offers some respite for tired, watery eyes.

* If you need to wear prescription glasses to drive, never replace them with non-prescription sunglasses. It is illegal and does not make for safe driving. Instead, buy a pair of prescription sunglasses, or use clip-on lenses over your prescription lenses. A cautionary note: You should make sure that your clip-on lenses are suitable for plastic lenses.

* In adverse weather conditions where visability is poor, such as heavy rain or snow, never wear tinted glasses. This rule is equally applicable to tinted motorbike helmets.

Safe driving also means "vision care" or essential checks for your auto. Don't restrict your view by putting non-essential stickers on the windows of your vehicle, or hanging objects such as dolls or dice where they might prove a distraction.

Keep your windscreen clean and free from scratches, and your lights adjusted to provide good illumination without causing glare. Protect your eyes from the glare of other vehicles by looking slightly to the left of oncoming traffic at night. Temporary blindness caused by glare can be particularly dangerous.

Safe driving means showing continuing responsibility. As we have seen, restrictions can apply to drivers where vision is impaired from cataracts, glaucoma, diabetes or any other relevant medical conditions which constitute a notifiable disability.

There are two key points to note here. First, if you are involved in an accident and are subsequently found to have an undeclared visual impairment, your insurance cover could be at risk.

Secondly, and more reassuringly, having a notifiable visual impairment does not automatically preclude your being allowed to drive. Limited-period licenses, issued to keep a regular check on your condition, and licenses restricting driving to daytime only, should be viewed as the ultimate safeguard of both vision care and safe driving.

You've had a long day at the office, you are at your desk in front of your computer. You're exhausted, tired, aching all over, you have a headache and your eyes feel like they are dry and on fire. Focusing on your monitor is getting difficult. You may feel that you are just overworked, but it may actually be the result of eye strain.
Most people think eye safety at work involves protecting your eyes with those big thick plastic goggles with the tight elastic that stop flying metal fragments or acids from causing major eye injury.
However, common eye injury can occur to the average office worker who uses a computer regularly.
Symptoms of eye strain can include:
  • dry eyes
  • blurred vision
  • itchy eyes
  • watery eyes
  • tired eyes

  • headaches
  • fatigue
  • muscle tension
  • double vision

Congenital glaucoma, which occurs in children, damages the vision of its victims since they are too young to understand that there is something wrong with their eyes.

Computer Eye Strain: Symptoms and Remedies

Over a period of time, excessive computer use can have cumulative negative effects including the worsening of farsightedness, nearsightedness, astigmatism, eye-focusing disorders, and poor eye coordination.   • Adjust screen brightness and contrast properly.
  • Use a desk lamp if possible instead of an overhead light.
  • Control glare from overhead lights and uncurtained windows. Use an anti-glare screen, or move your terminal to an area of limited glare.
  • If you work in a cubicle, try to give it a feeling of more expansiveness by, for example, placing a mirror on one of the walls to create the illusion of more space.

Firstly, let's start with the basics - near-sightedness and far-sightedness; also known as myopia and hyperopia. For both ailments, prescription lenses that are made up accordingly to your specific needs and specific strengths, are the perfect solution.
Going one further, people - both farsighted and nearsighted - may also suffer from something called, 'astigmatism' which is basically when your cornea is curved (in the shape of a football rather than the shape of a basketball) and therefore, you see things blurred because your eye cannot focus clearly - no matter what the distance. This is often an inherited problem and not something that can be prevented. In addition, the strength of the curve may increase over time, so this needs to be tested at every optometrist visit. Again, prescription eyeglasses and prescription sunglasses, are a great solution! Your doctor may prescribe glasses with no sphere and only correction for the astigmatism which will be indicated in your prescription's cylinder and axis.
Moving along, presbyopia is an eye problem most commonly occurs in the middle age years - around age 40, whereby one can see well at a distance, but cannot focus on objects close up. Where this is different to far-sightedness is that people require the ability to see close up and far away in one instance. Therefore, multifocal glasses are produced with an inner changing gradient of lens power that is produced according to the wearer's specific needs. In all progressive glasses, the gradient begins with the wearers distance prescription and then moves down to the wearers maximum prescription needs. Therefore, the wearer will have one prescription at the top part of the lens and another further down, in the case of bifocal glasses; whereby with other multifocal glasses, such as trifocals, the lens will include three different strengths.
Other common problems include:
- Strabismus (Cross-eye) - when the eyes are not properly aligned or not straight. It is essential that this be diagnosed as early as possible because failure to treat this problem may result in complete loss of vision in that eye or lazy eye; as well as terrible embarrassment caused by the look of the eye. Treatment can include a variety of options, depending on the extent of the problem. Some of these include glasses, eye patches, drug treatments, eye exercises, botulinum toxin and in the worst cases, surgery.
- Amblyopia (Lazy Eye) is another common eye problem, mainly caused by the fact that another problem was not dealt with in childhood. If not dealt with early enough, such an eye can lead to complete blindness. The earlier treatment is started, the higher the rate of success and it must address both the condition itself and its cause. Because the brain and eye are not working as they should, the treatment trains the brain to use visual signals from the weak eye. Some methods used are: wearing an eye patch; using eye drops; wearing glasses; or, in the worst cases, surgery.
- Colorblindness, medically known as Color Vision Deficiency, is when people have difficulty identifying certain colors. Unfortunately, there really is no cure for this and the sufferers tend to just accept it and live out their lives as normal.
- Blindness - according to experts, the leading cause of blindness is a vitamin A deficiency, however, complications from premature births are also on the list - such as congenital cataracts, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and so on.

Eye Surgery Vs Natural Vision Correction

 

First of, did you know that there are naturally ways of restoring your eyesight? Most people don't. And I am not talking about medication or a certain type of a diet here, although that can also help correct your eyesight naturally. In this short article, I want to give a quick overview, from my own perspective, of what the eye surgery is, and how it compares to the natural eyesight restoration methods and techniques.
So, what *is* an eye surgery? Generally speaking, there are two ways to perform an eye surgery today. There is a laser surgery and a 'manual' surgery. Laser surgery uses the laser, while manual surgery involves using heat and radio waves, I believe. Both of these surgeries have one common goal, which is to reshape the eyeball, and so manually help it focus. Most common surgery today is called "Lasik", and it's considered to be the easiest and safest for the patient.
Now, natural vision restoration is something completely different, though it does the same thing - i.e. reshaped the eye, thus helping it focus properly. This is how it works. when we look at an object, the point on which we focus is called the "central fixation point". It is interesting to know that although when we look at something and we seem to see the whole object, we are actually only looking at one tiny spot at a time, and we see the rest with our, so-called, "peripheral" vision. We get this focus when our extrinsic/intrinsic eye muscles work together to shape the eye. Now, problems occur when these eye muscles stop working properly, and our eye is therefore not shaped optimally for us to get a good central fixation point, and so we start seeing blurry, double etc.
Now, I have considered this surgery myself just a couple of months before I learnt of the natural method. I even went to them and had a test to see "if I was suitable for it". And I sure was. The only thing they said they appeared to be surprised about is the fact that my eyesight was deteriorating so quickly. But I am 22 now, and so they said that my eyesight should be stable already. And so I had a green light, and now only needed to finish my degree, and find รก3,000 for the surgery. I was thrilled with this, because I really wanted to get my perfect vision back, and I saw this I my only chance to do so.
Well, I did some research on the internet, and have found out that it's not as safe as made out to be. - That there is "a small" chance for complications. I don't want to lie to you, so please don't take my words as your Bible, but, from what I can remember, I was told that every 20 person has long-term complications, and around 1% of people have serious complications. At the time of writing this article, anyway. There are also A LOT of websites out there nowadays (and thank God for that, I hope that there will soon be the same amount for natural restoration methods) on all the possible side effects, or what goes wrong for people, etc. But that wouldn't stop me, if it was my only option... I mean I would have risked it, because I really wanted to see clearly.
But anyhow, I've now restored my eyesight with simple eye exercises, and I would recommend it to anyone with bad vision. Here's a few advantages of the natural method:
- Free
- No Risk Involved, Whatsoever
- Anyone Is "Suitable" For It
- No Need To Go Anywhere, can do this stuff in our own time and anywhere
- Guarantee Of Success For Life, because you would now be able to quickly strengthen your vision whenever you see it starting to deteriorate for whatever reason throughout your lifetime
These are just a few advantages I have created. Now, possible advantages for an eye surgery are:
- Time It Takes for the natural stuff is a maximum (the fastest recommended) of a dioptre per week, while laser surgery takes only 1 minute per eye for the actual procedure (+30 days of adaptation though, eye drops, bandages e.t.c., and the time of preparing, physically getting there e.t.c.)
- Less Work On Your Part, someone else does most of the work for you, in exchange for your money
Nothing else comes to mind in terms of eye surgery advantages...
If you're interested to see what your vision would look like if you were unlucky, then there is this website that was put together by a group of the "unlucky" people, (and here's another place worth visiting, as they show what vision looks like *if* you are to experience complications), who started experiencing problems after their eye surgery (remember that even 1% of a 1,000 is 10, and there're A LOT of people who decide to go for an eye surgery early around the world).
My conclusion is that, undoubtedly, natural eyesight restoration 'rocks' *big time, when compared to an eye surgery. I would *never, in a millions years* go for an eye surgery, knowing what I know (and you know this now also). I do realise, however, that there is a lot of "simple" people out there, who would just go for an eye surgery anyway, even after reading this, and that's absolutely fine with me, because it's totally their choice.

Exercises will help our vision improve tremendously; and besides that, it will relieve us of a lot of strain we put them through as a result of work. One of the early signs of fatigue and stress is when our vision become blurry, and requires rest. If adequate care is not taken to rest your sight when you ought to, it may lead to other complications, which may require the use of contact glasses or corrective surgery. To get over strain and stress, the following natural vision correction techniques or methods will be highly useful.
The Dot Method (dot or period method)
Look for a period or dot on a book page, and focus on it. Do this until the dot comes into focus before taking your sight off it. You will discover that the dot will become blurry after a fear seconds. Close your eyes after a few seconds so that they can relax. Now, take a second look at the dot on the page; but do not stare straight at it this time around. Blink during this second stage of this technique; and have a picture of the period formed in your mind before taking a final look at the dot again. By now your vision should have improved; and seeing the period will become easier.
The Word Method (five or more letter word method)
You also need a book page to do this exercise; but this time around you need to find up to five or more letters to focus your sight on. Stare straight at this letter for a few seconds; getting a mental picture of the letters or word as you stare at it. The word will become blurry just like the dot exercise after a few seconds of staring at it. Just like the dot method too, you need to blink your eyes over the word; but make sure you do not force them to see what they do not want to see. By the time you are done with this method, things would have improved with your poor vision.
The Double Vision Technique (or team work)
Having your sights work together as a team is what this method to improve your vision is all about. Never try to squint as some people do when trying to carry out this exercise. However, squinting with both eyes will achieve a better result than trying to do this with one eye, while the other is used to do something else. Focusing your sight on a particular object at the same time is one of the best techniques aimed at making them see as a team. This is one of my favorites when it comes to eye exercises to improve eyesight.
The Bates Method
If many articles have spoken a lot about the Bates method first introduced in 1880, then it is worth giving a try by you. A lot of experts have improved upon this method over the past few years; making it one of the most sought-after methods in the world.
