Regular Eye Exams - What Does it Involve and What Does an Eye Exam Cost?

Even if you've never had an eye exam (and if you haven't, you definitely should rush to your nearest ophthalmologist), you probably know some of the procedures - reading a chart of increasingly smaller alphabets kept at a distance, the eye doctor plugging in different powered lenses into a large, menacing looking apparatus. As a child, an eye exam filled me with a particular sense of dread and I don't think I've ever been over that.

So what exactly is an eye exam?

It is essentially a series of tests performed by an ophthalmologist, designed to ascertain a patient's ocular health status. These tests may range from determining the strength and health of eye sight (i.e. whether you can see clearly without needing glasses), determining the power of your eyes (if you need glasses), testing for any common eye diseases, and checking for conditions such as color blindness, irregular curvature of the lens, etc.

An eye exam should be performed only by a trained ophthalmologist. An optometrist may also conduct an eye exam, but that would be limited to determining the power of your eye.
Regular eye exams are recommended by all doctors as most eye diseases are asymptomatic. Further, many serious illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, etc. may manifest themselves as ocular defects. Thus, they may help in diagnosing other serious diseases early, paving the path for easier treatment.

An eye test typically begins with an examination of the external features of the eyes, such as the eyelids, the cornea, sclera (the white part of the eye), etc. After that, the examination moves into a visual acuity test (i.e. a test of the eye's power and ability to focus on near and far objects - the test you are probably most familiar with).

The next test is a Pupil function test to determine the health of the pupil and detect any damage (physical, neurological etc.). After this, an eye exam may include a test of ocular motility (i.e. testing the eye's ability to follow quickly moving objects, usually carried out when patients complain of double vision), and a test of the visual field. There may be several other tests depending on your own ocular health.

Eye exam costs may differ from state to state and city to city. Typically, an eye exam may cost anything from $50 to $300 depending on the range of tests done. Costs may be even higher if a patient is found to be suffering from any serious ocular condition that requires extensive testing.
Many people tend to ignore regular eye tests, despite maintaining a healthy lifestyle and getting regular complete body check-ups. As I've said before in this article, these can often reveal the existence of far more serious medical conditions, so it is imperative for the sake of your eyes as well as your body to get undergo regular eye tests.

Retinal Detachment - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

By James S. Pendergraft

The retina of eyes is attached to the tissues which lie under the eye and the separation of the two is known as retinal detachment. The common causes of this situation is the breakage of the retina or the tearing of it. The breakage of the retina may be caused by the detachment of the vitreous gel from the retina. The two their part of the eye is filled with the vitreous gel and it is this gel that covers the entire retina and if the strength of the retina is fragile, it leads to its breakage. If the blood vessels in the retina are present in the breakage, it causes bleeding of the eye. However, most of the retinal detachments that happen are not a cause of injury.

If the retina tears, it gives way to the vitreous gel to get into the back of the retina. It is this layer of accumulated gel that causes the detachment of the retina from the eye. As more and more of the gel gets accumulated and layered behind the retina, the detachment increases and in some cases the entire retina is detached. This happens when the tear is very big. The retinal detachment is mostly prominent in a single eye. It does not affect both the eyes. When such an incident happens, even the other eye is thoroughly checked for any signs of tears or breaks in the retina. This is done to safeguard the second eye so that preventive measures can be taken.

The patient who is experiencing the symptoms of retinal detachment sees flashing lights in the initial stages. A person who has this symptom has to immediately see the eye doctor without further delay. The retina could be saved in many cases if shown on time. The effect of flashing light is caused by the loosening of the vitreous which allows the gel to get in contact with the retina. There is also the symptom where the person can visualize floaters. This is caused when the vitreous gel gets solid to even an insignificant extent. If treated earlier itself, the treatment is much more effective.

The treatment for retinal detachment is done with the help of laser therapy where the holing and tearing of the retina is treated. Another way of treatment is by freezing the retina. While the retina is frozen, even the gel freezes and it is thus prevented from layering at the back of the retina. This eventually prevents the retinal detachment in the initial stages. In other worse cases, where the retina is almost detached, a surgery is immediately performed.

These eye surgeries are of three types:
Scleral buckling
Pneumatic retinopexy
Vitrectomy

The holes and tearing that is caused in the retina has to be treated as the vision of the person is blurred or in some cases partially blinded. The impairment in the vision can aggravate and cause permanent blindness if not treated immediately. Thus it is advised to always take good care of the eyes.

Abortion Clinic. Dr. James S. Pendergraft opened the Orlando Women's Center in March 1996 to provide a full range of health care for women, including abortion clinic, physical examinations, family planning and counseling.

Eye Allergies - Do You Suffer From Eye Allergies?

What begins as a harmless piece of dust can end up causing an allergic reaction in people who have sensitive eyes. The immune system triggers a response to what it perceives as a threat and or pollen can cause excessive tearing and drainage including mucus. Eye allergies also cause the eyes to be overly sensitive and irritated feeling and can lead to conjunctivitis and other conditions such as asthma.

The Cause of Eye Allergies
Most are caused by airborne allergens. These can include mold, dust, pet dander, and pollen. Some other causes can include cosmetics and medications that are taken in the eye usually in the form of drops.

Symptoms of Eye Allergies
o Red Eyes
o Itchy Eyes
o Sore Eyes
o Watery or Tearing Eyes
o Swollen Eyes
o Runny Nose
o Sneezing
o Itchy Nose
o Itchy, Sore Throat
o Sinus Pressure
o Headache
o Itchy Mouth
o Difficulty Breathing

Eye Allergy Treatment
The best treatment for eye allergies is to avoid the causes. Staying clear of pet dander and keeping your home free of dust is a good beginning. Using a filter in your vacuum cleaner and air conditioners is another great way to keep the irritants in the air to a minimum. Avoiding dust storms and staying indoors in an air conditioned area can help to filter the pollen and keep it from irritating the eye as well.

When you can't avoid the causes of eye allergies there are medications that can treat the symptoms. There are over the counter eye drops that can treat the symptoms. It is best to use eye drops with few ingredients, saline solution is the best eye drop. Adding chemicals to the eyes can be dangerous and cause damage to sight.

Antihistamines are used to relieve the symptoms of airborne allergens. Using decongestants in combination with an antihistamine can relieve symptoms faster than using an antihistamine alone.
Antibiotics can be used in conjunctivitis if the allergies get to this point. While oral antibiotics are used to treat many conditions but eye conditions are often treated with an ointment directly in the eye.

How to take care of your eyes in daily life

By Jeffery Scott

Eyes are the organs why you can enjoy the wonderful world. A good 20/20 vision eye is the dream of every person. In fact, there are rarely people with excellent vision in their whole life. Some people have inborn eye diseases. Some people have deteriorated eyes with the age becoming older. Some people have more or less the near-sighted problem because of staring the computer, or television too long at a young age. So it is indispensable that everyone should learn something about how to take care his eyes in daily life to maintain good eyesight.

Diet, such as carrots, spinach, kale, broccoli and other green vegetables, is good for a healthy eye. Recently, a study shows that diet which is rich of omega-3 fatty acid can reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is the leading cause of blindness among the elderly. The omega-3 fatty acid generally exists in oily fish, sardines, salmon and some kinds of vegetables. So it is suggested that you have carrots, vegetables and foods with high omega-3 fatty acid level every day.
Drinking a lot of water is advantageous to the function of the whole body including the eyes. It is best to drink eight to ten cups of water each day. But the alcohol drinking is not recommended as the negative effects of the alcohol to the body organs.

Enough sleep is essential for both refreshed spirit and good eyesight. The time of sleeping alters according to different people. The young usually need about eight to nine hours sleeping to own a good condition. The elder may only need about four to five hours and they do not feel sleepy. It depends not to your time of sleeping but to the time which fits you best. A sleepy situation will introduce dry and sore eyes, and if the same situation lasts for a long time, your eyesight, of course, can not bear it.

Exercise is an effective way to improve your eyesight. You can do both eye focus and rotation exercise to get your muscles fully relaxed, in particular when you staring at something for an extremely long period. It is better if you can have your eyes watching a lot of green. Swimming is a recommendable sport which can have the whole body, not only eyes, relaxed. But as the sea water contains a lot of salt, so please be careful not to get your eyes sore and irritated. If your eyes are sensitive to the sea water, you can take the eye drop to alleviate the pain.

Except for those ways introduced above, regular eye test is necessary for a good vision. You can recognize how your eye is going after a year, and you may have other eye disease detected earlier. In that situation, the disease is more likely to be cured. At the same time, the doctor will give you advice about the types of eyeglass you should wear and what should be paid attention to when wearing it if you have vision problem. It is good for the eye protection.

Above all, having a good habits of lifestyle, including healthy diet, moderate exercise and regular eye test, are the keys of maintaining good eyesight. So please follow the above advices to improve your vision in your daily life.

Eye Protection Basics - How to Choose the Best Safety Eyewear

By Alicia Connolly

Why You Need To Purchase Eye Protection

The United States Federal Government has extensive legislation and a system of guidelines that has been designed to keep its citizens safe and healthy. The governing body that regulates this legislation is known as OSHA, the Occupational Safety & Health Administration. According to OSHA every year approximately $300-500 million dollars are spent in the U.S. because of eye injuries. OSHA estimates that 90% of all eye injuries can be prevented through the use of proper protective eyewear, other estimates put forth by OSHA regarding job-related eye injuries conclude that over 3 million workers' vision is at risk daily and that out of those 3 million workers over 2000 are actually injured every business day, from these 2000 job-related eye injuries 10-20% result in temporary or permanent vision loss. OSHA requires employers to provide appropriate eye protection to their workers while on the job because it is an investment worth making!

Eye Protection - What to Look For?

The American National Standards Institute also known as ANSI is the recognized entity that sets forth manufacturing safety standards within the United States. Currently, ANSI Z87.1-2003 requires safety glasses and safety goggles to provide adequate eye protection from the hazards for which they were designed, eye protection should provide a secure fit without interfering with movement or vision, they should be able to be easily cleaned and disinfected, protective safety eyewear should be reasonably comfortable, durable and have the ability to fit over or incorporate prescription safety eyewear. Z87+, an updated ANSI Standard includes new mass and high impact standards which are not yet mandated by OSHA.

When it comes to protective safety eyewear one size definitely does not fit all, it is important to know what to look for when choosing eye protection that will work with you on the job. The right fit is essential for comfort, performance and most importantly eye protection. If your safety glasses or safety goggles do not fit properly they will not protect you from risking a serious eye injury, if there are large gaps in coverage your eyes are exposed and flying debris, particles or chemicals could easily cause an eye injury. To ensure that your safety eyewear fits properly some styles of safety glasses and safety goggles offer adjustment features, or are available in multiple sizes to accommodate different facial shapes, thus providing a more customized fit for the worker. Workers are also more likely to wear comfortable fitting safety eyewear, that is stylish which increases worker compliance and decreases the risk of job-related eye injuries among workers.

If you are an employer in charge of determining what safety eyewear to choose for your employees or if you are a worker that wants the best fitting safety glasses or safety goggles for the job keep the following ideas in mind:

Frame & Fit:

Try or offer safety eyewear with multiple frame sizes so that the best protective eyewear option is chosen or available. Safety eye protection with adjustable nose pads or soft flexible fingers will easily conform to fit almost any nasal profile. Safety eyewear with adjustable temples or bendable wire core temples can provide a more secure fit and behind the ear comfort. Safety eyewear with ratcheting temples provides lens inclination to contour any cheek profile.

Filters & Shades:

Safety eyewear may be fitted with all different shades and filters to accommodate any job requirement or environment use the guide below to know how to choose the best eye protection for the job:

Filter Shades: Used to protect against ultra-violet and infrared radiation that are generated when working with molten metals, in welding, cutting, soldering and brazing.

Torch Soldering: Filter Shade 2

Natural Vision Correction - How To Improve Eyesight Naturally To See Without Glasses Or Contacts

By HB Smith

Did you know that there are eye exercises you can do to improve eyesight naturally? If not, it is time you study up on the topic and get informed, especially if you ever want to be able to see without glasses. The fact is, too many people depend on their contacts and glasses, but it is possible to go without them, if you just practice a few exercises. If you do the eye exercises to improve vision correctly, you may be able to have perfect vision. It is understandable if you do not believe me because you have developed a dependency on your glasses and contacts, and that is what doctors have told you is your only option. Today, though, I am going to tell you the truth; and truth is you can improve eyesight naturally and be able to see without glasses or contacts.

Now, I am not saying that every eyesight problem can be fixed by these exercises, but most can. Whether you are nearsighted or farsighted, you can do these eye exercises to improve vision. Are you longing to know more? Read the rest of this article and your questions will be answered.

Factors That Contribute To Vision Problems

The number of individuals that need corrective eye aids has increased a lot over the last ten years. This is mainly due to the hectic lifestyles we all lead. There are many people that spend all day staring at their computer monitors and avoid doing any physical activity. Staring at a computer all day or watching TV too much can have ill effects on your sight.

Eyeglasses And Contact Lenses

The first thought, whenever eyesight begins to be a problem, is to search for something that can help. Corrective glasses and contacts are usually the easiest way to help your vision, but these are simply quick fixes. They do help alleviate headaches and blurry vision, but they make your eyes lazy. The issue with glasses and lenses is that they do not address the underlying problem, so we are not curing the vision problem, we are just finding temporary relief.

The Permanent Cure

Instead of relying on glasses and contacts, individuals can do eye exercises to improve vision and learn how to see without glasses. The eye is a muscle and if you do the right exercises, like palming, you can improve eyesight naturally. Palming can teach the eye how to relax and stop straining. To start palming exercises just do these steps:

1.) Warm up your hands

2.) Place the palms of your hands over your eyes for three minutes

3.) Repeat this process two or three times a day and make sure no light leaks in while you are covering your eyes

Dr. William Bates brought eye exercises into schools in the 1880s and found that they were very beneficial to teach people how to see without glasses. If you have an interest in doing these exercises to improve eyesight naturally, try it and see if it helps you.

Examples of Eye Emergencies - What You Should Know

By Tara Pingle

There are three different levels of eye emergencies, so the action you take will depend on what level of emergency you are facing. You need to assess the emergency quickly so that your action will be prompt and effective.

1. True eye emergencies - call for immediate treatment within seconds or minutes.

2. Urgent emergencies - need some sort of diagnosis and treatment within 1 or 2 hours.

3. Semi-urgent eye emergencies - require treatment within days or weeks

Examples of True Eye Emergencies

- Chemical burns when acidic or other burning chemicals enter the eye

- Cuts when objects enter and pierce the eye

- Retinal artery occlusion which is an abrupt but painless loss of vision when the main artery to the retina is blocked

How to Treat True Eye Emergencies

If you are experiencing a true eye emergency, DO NOT:

- Apply pressure to an eye which has a foreign object in it or a cut on it

- Remove a contact lens or other object in the eye

- Touch or rub the eye

If you can't get medical attention immediately, cover the eye with a bandage, eye shield, or paper cup taped in position.

To treat chemical burns, flush the eye with water right away and repeat every 15 minutes. Don't put anything else into the eye and go to the nearest emergency room.

Do not try to treat retinal artery occlusion yourself. Go to the nearest emergency room.

Examples of Urgent Eye Emergencies

- Cellulitis - eye socket infection which causes inflammation and pain

- Corneal abrasion - scratch on the cornea caused by foreign object(s) in the eye

- Corneal ulcer - little painful sore on the cornea

- Endophthalmitis - infection in the interior of the eye which causes abrupt, extreme eye pain and impairment of vision

- Foreign object in the eye - may penetrate the eyeball

- Glaucoma - unexpected increase in pressure in the eyeball, causing reduced vision and pain

- Hyphema - bleeding into the front chamber of the eye, often due to blunt trauma

- Iritis - inflammation in the front chamber of the eye which results in redness and light sensitivity

- Lid laceration - cut on either the upper or lower eyelid or both

- Retinal detachment or tear - the retina becomes torn or detached causing flashing lights, "floaters" (spots on the eye), or shadows covering a portion of the visual field

For treatment of any of the above urgent eye emergencies, visit an urgent care center or a qualified ophthalmologist in the first few hours after noticing the eye emergency.

Examples of Semi-urgent Eye Emergencies

- Broken facial bones - eye socket bone fractures

- Exophthalmos - bulging of the eyeball which looks like staring

- Eye tumors - growths or masses that occur in or next to the eye

- Muscle imbalances - eyes are not aligned with one another

- Optic nerve tumors - growths or masses that occur in or next to the optic nerve

- Optic neuritis - swelling of the optical nerve causing rapid haziness and/or dimness of vision in either eye or both

- Orbit tumors - tumors in the cavity or socket of the skull in which the eye and its appendages are situated.

Treatment of semi-urgent eye emergencies should be sought within a few days to a few weeks (depending on the condition). Read more about eye injuries on an opthalmologist's website.
